It is true! We treat Vertigo!
In fact, Physical Therapy is the #1 way to treat vertigo, because it requires head positioning and maneuvers to reduce the symptoms.
Here’s how it works:
The most common type of vertigo we see is Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV for short. This type of vertigo causes sudden onset of mild to severe dizziness, resulting from dislodged calcium crystals (canaliths) found within the ear canal. These moving deposits throw off our balance and stability.
We use the Dix-Hallpike test to diagnosis BPPV. Upon this diagnosis, we will then begin using the Epley maneuver as part of your treatment. These maneuvers involve specific head and body positional changes that move the calcium deposits in the ear canal that cause the vertigo. By moving these deposits, and accurately performing these maneuvers with our trained therapists, it will alleviate the symptoms of vertigo, ultimately until it is no longer present and the deposits are gone.
Your therapist will also work with you on balance techniques, improving your stability, and will educate you on how you can alleviate symptoms at home with exercises and practice. These methods are suitable for all types of vertigo, as they allow you to stabilize and retrain the balance you had before the onset of symptoms.
