Is Physical Therapy beneficial before surgery?
YES! Doing Physical Therapy before your surgery can help strengthen and train your body for what is to come before you undergo surgery and may become temporarily impaired or limited in activities. Physical Therapy before surgery can also incredibly aid in the Recovery process by making it easier, quicker, and less painful! PT can create muscle memory, allowing your body to remember what it is like to have normal functioning at the site before you undergo surgery. PT will also assist in strengthening the muscles, improving balance, and allow you to learn functional training and practice using assistive devices, (Cane, Walker, Grabbers, etc.) in preparation for when or if you will need to use them. Strengthening with PT beforehand also helps increase flexibility for better movement post-surgery. Your overall recovery will be better with Physical Therapy before your procedure! It is Evidence Based!!
