Happy New Year! What better way to ring in the new year than new year resolutions to improve your health and well-being in 2023. Help prevent the mid-January slump we often experience with these resolutions by utilizing SMART goals. SMART goals give us a leg-up on being successful due to focusing on 5 characteristics:
S – Specific – You clearly say what you want to do
M – Measurable – Has an objective way to measure or track progress (think distances, repetitions, concrete numbers)
A – Attainable – Is realistic for you to successfully achieve
R – Relevant – Will benefit you in a tangible way
T – Time-based – Give yourself a deadline
For example, if you wanted to make a goal about daily stretching, you could say:
“I want to perform hip stretches (specific) five times per week (measurable & realistically attainable) to improve my ability to stand at work (relevant) for the next six weeks (time-based).”
Some examples of health-based subjects that may benefit you to include in your 2023 resolutions include focusing on improving flexibility, daily strengthening exercises, drinking a certain amount of water per day, daily meditation, or sleep.
