Vertigo is the feeling that the room is spinning when you are standing still. It is quite common; in fact, around 30% of people experience it at least once in their lifetime. This condition can affect anyone but is more common in older individuals, especially women.
Vertigo is a sense of moving, spinning, or swaying while a person is perfectly still. Symptoms include feeling dizzy, lightheadedness, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms can be debilitating for some and even pose a great risk for those over the age of 65 because it leads to falls.
What causes vertigo?
Vertigo is an ailment that can be caused by many different factors including vascular/circulatory impairment, infections in the inner ear, imbalances in the ear, and issues with the central nervous system. Here are some common causes that we often treat.
BPPV
The most common cause of vertigo that we treat is Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo also known as BPPV. This condition occurs when the calcium carbonate crystals inside of your ears break apart into microscopic pieces. These pieces then become lodged in the semicircular canal which disrupts the fluid inside of your ear creating a false sense of movement.
Heart Disease
Heart problems can have effects on any part of your body, but your head is the most vulnerable. A stroke, or any other shock to your nervous system, can throw off the balance of your inner ear.
Meniere Disease
Meniere disease is a condition where the fluid in the inner ear overflows and damages other parts of the ear. This causes issues with balance because your ears are unable to work properly. This disease often occurs in individuals who have ear infections, smoke, or drink too much alcohol.
Treatment
Most people who experience vertigo do not realize that physical therapy is one of the best treatment options. At Synergy Physical Therapy and Wellness we use the Dix-Hallpike test to diagnose BPPV. Once diagnosed, we use the Epley maneuver as part of your treatment. This treatment involves specific head and body maneuvers that move the calcium particles in your ear canal. With continued treatment, your symptoms will dissipate until they are no longer present.
Your physical therapist will also work with you to improve your balance and stability. We have exercises that can help you no matter what the cause of your vertigo is. Additionally, there are several home remedies for vertigo that your therapist can educate you on.
